about

“How To Get Where You Want To Go” is the second release by Human Potential, the solo project of Andrew Becker - former drummer for Dischord Records’ band, Medications and Brooklyn larrikins, Screens.

Droplets of nuggets of songs for HTGWYWTG began accruing in 2014, soon after Becker was browbeaten into eating a red, vinyl copy of Chrome’s “Third From the Sun”, by his second cousin, Scott Glenn. The stark sine waves, cosmic clarions and embolic fractures of flailing resonance permeated his veins, inducing a proto-psychedelic, post-pneumatic encounter of spatial sputtering and disembodied directives.

With his heart chakra teeming, Becker decided to follow this experiential, shining path of unmitigated filth, steadfastly sitting on a chair in his New York bed and breakfast, pouring into a digital interface, every last metric ton of guitar strangulation and subbed up synthesizer scum he could muster.

Just like Hugh Masekela did before recording “You Told Your Momma Not To Worry”, AB telefaxed Brooklyn music documentarian, Jeremy Scott, hoping that he could lend a callous hand in abetting the creation of what promised to be a canonical interpretation of David Axelrod’s “Songs of Experience” and Harold Budd’s “Abandoned Cities”.

In January of 2015, the two decided to convene in a beautifully renovated dungeon, next to a curated sandwich shop to start the recording process. Long days and short nights of work ensued, wherein Becker’s squalid musical inclinations were polished, cut and mixed into a saccharine spurt of substantial resistance.

After months of myopic labor, Becker finally produced his second long player, “How To Get Where You Want To Go”. The album’s ten tracks are an exploration of dreams, nightmares and observations, colored by a soundtrack of taciturn-pop and vigorous ambience. At its core…deep, deep down, it’s an earnest attempt to trap romance, loneliness, isolation and euphoria in a semi-cohesive piece of music that begets desire and implores passion.
